CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Mako "Roadhog" Rutledge
AGE: 49
CANON: Overwatch

CANON HISTORY:

- a simple solar farmer in the outback of australia, which is where people went if they wanted to be "left alone"
- after the omnic crisis, the government offered the outback and its omnium to omnics as a sign of goodwill and in order to keep peace
- dissatisfied with this, the residents of the outback formed the australian liberation front, in an attempt to take back their home from the omnics they perceived as having taken it from them
- having sabotaged the omnium's fusion core, it exploded and irradiated the entire outback, turning it into mad max basically
- Having to adapt to this new environment, irradiated and filled with merciless sociopaths, Mako donned a gas mask and took to the broken highways of the outback on his bike, losing his humanity overtime until "Mako" died, leaving only Roadhog, the merciless killer.
- One day he happened upon Jamison "Junkrat" Fawkes, a junker who was being pursued by gang members, bounty hunters and opportunists all looking to learn valuable information from him. Information he'd taken from exploring the ruins of the destroyed omnium in the outback. In exchange for him protecting Junkrat from...well, everyone, Mako would receive an even 50/50 split of all future spoils.
- From that moment on, the pair went on to become the most successful pair of criminals in the entire world. They committed a bank heist in Dorado, stole the crown jewels from England, ransacked an arcade and even robbed an ice cream truck. They've caused millions of dollars worth of property damage in total, but the exact number is unknown.
- At some point in time, the duo were hired by the owner of hyde global to rescue some workers from omnic terrorists. However, upon entering the scene, they discovered the omnics were actually security drones owned by hyde global themselves, as was the building (which they demolished in the process). Once the police arrived, the pair absconded, having realised that they were set up, taking revenge later on by stringing the owner of hyde global up on a crane, then detonating the building and killing him in revenge.
- During Christmas, they visited a theme park.

CANON PERSONALITY:

Roadhog's a violent, remorseless killer who makes his living touring the world alongside his partner in crime Junkrat. Having lost everything in the aftermath of a massive radioactive explosion, he donned a gas mask and left behind his old self, Mako, forever.

With Roadhog, what you see is what you get. Although he's a quiet figure most of the time, preferring to speak through actions than words, those actions tend to be violent and, when he does speak, his words match his temperament. Many of his voice lines in the actual game are the most mocking and sadistic amongst the cast, often exclaiming he's gonna make whoever's he's decided to kill "squeal like a little pig", and bursting into uproarious laughter as he kills other characters, and should he kill either Soldier 76 or Reaper, sarcastically quips "nice mask". Even to his aforementioned partner in crime, Roadhog shows little in the way of remorse or kindness, either remarking "you finally did something useful" when an ally junkrat eliminates an enemy team member, or "someone finally shut him up" when an ally kills an enemy Junkrat.

In fact, nothing showcases Mako's personality more clearly than his interactions with Junkrat in-game, being one of the only people he actually talks to. More often than not he's exhausted by him; Junkrat mentions out loud that Mako did tell him a funny joke at one point, but when asked to repeat it, Roadhog merely tells him to shut up in response. He also constantly reminds Junkrat to stay out of trouble, if only to make Roadhog's job as his bodyguard a little easier, but it's the closest thing to concern he really shows over him, which in and of itself is fueled only by the fact he relies on Junkrat to get paid for his services. Even so, there is camaraderie between the two, having a shared voice line in which the pair declare "you hook 'em" / "and you cook 'em!". However, further attempts at Junkrat to initiate the lines again merely results in him telling Junkrat to shut up, once again...it goes without saying that while Roadhog does display a side of himself beyond the remorseless killer he is, these moments are few and far between.

Roadhog's attitude towards people - and the world at large - is primarily the result of losing the outback to omnics. Having had his home handed over to the omnics without his permission by the Australian government, Roadhog outright dislikes and opposes people in positions of authority (he even figures out that the ceo of hyde global set them up, with one of the reasons he gives Junkrat simply being because he's "a suit"). Due to tensions between omnics and humans from the omnic crisis years prior, something Roadhog lived through, and on top of the omnics perceived "invasion" of his homeland in the outback, he also mistrusts them to the same extent, and is effectively outright discriminatory towards them. Due to the fact that the irradiated humans of the outback are all paranoid, violent opportunists, he doesn't trust them either, which ultimately has left him a man without anyone in the world he can trust, always on guard of others and ready to abandon people at the drop of a hat, all to ensure his own survival. He even mentions that you, yourself, are "the only thing you can rely on in this broken world". Having lost everything and seen that the tensions between humans and omnics is consuming everything, he's a cynical sort who believes the only value to the world is what you can take from it.

Speaking of which, one of Roadhog's defining traits is his greed. He's incredibly materialistic, to the point that there's no low he won't sink to if what he takes is something he wants. He and Junkrat stole the crown jewels from England and a bank full of gold from Dorado, but some of his thefts have been more personal - he stole an entire collection of Pachimari plushes from an arcade in Japan which, along with some of his exclusive sprays depicting the plush as well, implies he has a fondness to them beyond their monetary worth. In a scene from the fake news report regarding their crime sprees, he's also shown robbing an ice cream truck by tearing the door off of its hinges from the back. Some of his voice lines in-game allude to this trait, remarking "[he] misses that crown" when in King's row, and that he's delighted to see that the bank in Dorado has "restocked" once he sees all of the gold there. That being said, with how they sold the crown jewels for money, it seems Roadhog doesn't want to hold onto valuables for their actual worth as what they are, instead interested only in the cash he can make on them to keep getting his hands on things that really interest him. It's not about the value of what he has to the world at large, but rather whatever value it has to him that matters.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Roadhog is 7ft tall and has the muscle to match. While he doesn't seem to have any kind of cybernetic augments or such like the rest of the cast, he's shown to be strong enough to toss around a tow truck hook with ease one handed, and is able to pull fully grown adults around with it without any trouble. In one of the shots from the news report regarding their crime spree, he's even shown ripping the back door off of an ice cream truck, so it foes without saying he's really strong. He also survived falling from a height high enough that, when he landed on a security drone, he crushed it into useless scrap without any injuries, implying he's likely far more durable than a regular human could be, which is reflected in-game by the fact he has a higher health pool than a man in a full suit of armour.

He has access to special gas canisters that give him regenerative properties when inhaled, allowing him to heal himself by a considerable amount. It's also stated by in-game lore that these canisters stave off the effects of the radiation poisoning he's afflicted with.

Aside from this, he has excellent survival skills. Not only used to dealing with killer robots and the irradiated outback filled to the brim with murderous opportunists, but also avoiding the police all across the globe.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Mako Rutledge
AU AGE: 50
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES:

Mako will retain his height of 7ft, but he won't be as cartoonishly overweight as Overwatch portrays him, instead mostly being muscle with an old man gut forming on his stomach. He'll also lack any of the implied disfigurement he likely has beneath his mask, considering his radiation poisoning, instead having the normal complexion you'd expect from a normal man his age.

AU HISTORY:

- Mako Rutledge was born in Australia. He had a fairly normal upbringing; his grades were nothing outstanding but he wasn't failing anything either. He participated in a lot of sports on account of his size giving him an advantage over his schoolmates, even at younger ages. He graduated without much ambition, not knowing what he wanted to do.

- He was brought into the world of organised crime through a friend, mostly as a means of escaping the humdrum life of getting a normal career. He made a living acting as an enforcer for a gang, often collecting debts, acting as a bodyguard or in general using his size to intimidate and bully people on behalf of his employer.

- Eventually, said employer found that the police were snooping too closely to his affairs and they were at risk of getting caught. He struck a deal with one of the detectives investigating him, having worked closely with him already through bribes and backdoor deals, offering Mako as a scapegoat. Mako was taken in and charged for all of the crimes his employer had committed, ending up in jail.

- He was in prison for several years. When he got out, he realised his mistakes and decided to go straight. Mako tried his best to settle down and get a normal job, but he felt ostracised from the community. He couldn't settle no matter how hard he tried.

- To get away from it all, he moved to Recolle to start a new life. He started off as a repairman, but once he had earned enough money had the bottom floor of his house converted into a shop area he could use as a pawn shop to sell odds and ends on top of his handyman services.

- During his time in Recolle, he received a call from an old friend whose son was moving to Recolle following his studies in Australia and needed a place to stay, asking Mako if he'd be willing to put him up as a favour. He accepted, as they were old friends who despite everything still trusted him. (The son in question is Junkrat, and junkrat's player and I have already cleared this with each other!)

- He's been in Recolle for quite a few years now, long enough that he's well known by the community at large as a fairly reputable businessman you can trust.

AU PERSONALITY:

- Mako, despite still having a criminal background, lacks the sociopathic tendencies his original self had. While he is reclusive, grumpy and stern, he is nowhere near the level of misanthropic maniac Roadhog is.

- Mako has friends outside of his criminal circle, who have avoided betraying him or treating him like dirt. As a result, his attitude towards other people is fairly tame; treat people how you'd like to be treated and value friends you can trust. However, he has low tolerance for punk kids or people who treat him badly.

- While Mako is still anti-establishment, it's a lot more grounded, which is to say while he doesn't think the government should interfere in people's lives at all, he won't go around causing havoc and killing people in defiance of societal norms. He also doesn't voice those beliefs unless you get him drunk or something.

- Aside from this, Mako is essentially roadhog if he were a functioning member of society. He works a job, he knows the locals, he keeps to himself and he isn't especially fond of loud and annoying people. He might be stern, short tempered and has little patience, but he's...an okay person! Really.

- Roadhog's aversion of technology common to all junkers instead manifests as him being old and therefore averse to social media and rapidly progressing technology, like phones and the internet. He doesn't know what memes are.
